What is a Strategic Frontier?

A Strategic Frontier is that unexplored area of potential growth that lies beyond today’s business and encompasses tomorrow’s opportunities, if discovered. We call this area a “frontier” because it is considered to have potential for growth but has not yet been fully explored.

Every organization has one. This is new language we invented to describe where an organization should look for future growth opportunities. The meaning is consistent with scientific “frontiers” or a nation’s “frontiers”. In every case, a frontier invites discovery of something new. For organizations, a strategic frontier is where you will discover opportunities for future growth. These opportunities might be termed breakthrough, disruptive, blue ocean or core, but they will not be discovered if you are not looking for them.
